The first School was built on Rock Hill in 1897, the site of Tyson Foods located on the Plain Dealing Highway, a one-room, log building for grades one through eight with an enrollment of 26 students. W.A. Miller served as principal. Later in 1902, the enrollment grew to 62 students for grades one through ten and Arthur Pope was appointed principal. W.B. Smith was named principal and teacher. He was successful in having the school approved as a state high school in 1909. By 1910, the Louisiana State Department of Education had approved and certified the first two graduates, Mrs. G. I. Reynolds and Arthur Miller. In 1920, a new brick building was built. J.L. Liggin served as principal and Springhill High School became an accredited high school. He was, also, made a member of the Louisiana State Athletic Association. From this date forward, Springhill High School has had graduates each year who have served with honor and dignity throughout this great land. Many of the Springhill graduates have served with prominence in the field of education, athletics, coaching, medicine, engineering, government, military, and in every endeavor of life. |
